Watch Your Space

 WATCH YOUR SPACE!

There’s a reason why people say “Choose your friends wisely” and “Show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are”.

The people you’re around the most, be it friends, family, even colleagues, can have a massive effect on you and your vibrations/mentality. No matter how positive, spiritual, or goal-driven you are, if you hang around people who are the opposite, they may not completely cancel that out (depending on how stubborn you are about those things), but you won’t really thrive in that environment.

Someone who’s full of positivity and someone who’s full of negativity can’t really reside in the same place as they are. One will definitely become either more positive, or more negative. And when it’s your group of friends or family etc. that are mostly negative, it’ll be close to impossible to stay as positive as you are because of that friction.

They may not be aware that they’re doing that, but because of their low vibrations and all, they’ll do anything to bring your vibrations down to match theirs. They could do things like say you’re goals are unrealistic and impossible to reach, start to exclude you from the social circle, giving you the cold shoulder or even being nasty to you, even going as far as gossiping about you behind your back, unless you go down to their level etc.

But please, don’t think that you need to stay around people like that just because they were always there for you and you don’t think you can survive without them and all.

I promise you, when you stop hanging around negative people, your quality of living will see massive improvement

hurt

Today one person has hurt you, tomorrow someone else will. You cannot control the entire world. Recognize that the problem is not outside; it is in your own mind. You have given the reins of your life in someone else's hands, just take them back! Make the fortress of your mind so strong, that no one in the world should have the right to take your smile away!

Sri Sri on Arrogance

Never in your life have the arrogance to say that you have achieved big heights. If you have achieved something it is the divine will, it is the divine intervention that has always protected you, cleared your path and given you the right opportunities at the right time.

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 - Verse 8

Verse: bhavan bhismas ca karnas ca
kripas ca samitim-jayah
ashvatthama vikarnas ca
saumadattis tathaiva ca

Translation: There are personalities like you, Bhishma, Karna, Kripa, Asvatthama, Vikarna and the son of Somadatta called Bhurisrava, who are always victorious in battle

AOL Knowledge Sheet!------RECYCLING and HYGIENE

Everything here is recycled. The earth is 200 million years old - the Alps, the water, the air. Billions of people have breathed the same air. All the particles in your body are old, you are recycled. Your thoughts and emotions are recycled, mind is recycled. You are a recycled person.

Everything here is recycled. Consciousness is recycled - its the same old consciousness. Remind yourself that everything here is recycled material - so relax! Everything goes to where it came from. Recycling brings back purity and hygiene. Knowledge recycles the mind.

Tarah says : Recycling makes everything new and therefore a mind that is recycled by knowledge finds everything fresh.

Knowledge keeps everything fresh. That is why you can keep recycling the same creation. A mind in Knowledge finds everything fresh. If you dont put Knowledge to the mind, the mind gets rotten. Knowledge brings the mind back to purity. Recycling brings purity and hygiene.

Hygiene supports health, and too much hygiene destroys health. In a too hygienic situation the immune system in the body becomes like lazy, unequipped soldiers. People who live in slums often dont get sick, because their immune system becomes like a well-trained soldier. Often people who are too fussy about hygiene have poor health. Sometimes unhygienic conditions create health. It keeps your immune system active, alive and strong, while Knowledge keeps your mind fresh.

Patanjali Yoga Sutras

Patanjali Yoga Sutras - Knowledge Sheet 9

(Continues from previous post: Dealing with modulations of the mind.)
Is practice alone enough? Patanjali says “No”. There are two oxen, which pull a cart. The two wheels of this cart areabhyasa (practice) on one side and vairagya (dispassion) on the other.

What is vairagya?

Drishtanu shravikavishaya vitrush’asya vashikara sanjna vairagyam

Dispassion is that state of supremacy of consciousness in the one free from the thirst of the perceptible and celestial enjoyment.
- Patanjali Yoga Sutra #15
The mind gallops towards the world of passion. You just keep quiet, close your eyes or open your eyes or do anything. Where does your mind go? It travels towards the sense of sight. You want to see something somewhere.
Or the mind runs towards the sense of smell, taste, sound and touch. Do you see that? Or it gallops towards something it has heard. It has never seen but it has read some thoughts. This craving for any of these experiences in the mind can stop you from being in the present moment.

Vairagya is that, when, for a few moments, however beautiful a scenery is, you say: “I am not interested at looking at it right now”. However good the food is, you say, “This is not the time. I am not interested in it”.
Even a few moments of retrieving our senses, the craving or thirst for objects and going back to the Source is vairagya. Are you getting this? This is another basic requirement for meditation. Whenever you want to meditate, your mind should be in dispassion. Without dispassion, your meditation is no good and cannot provide the rest that you are longing for.

Your mind is tired and bogged down by galloping through desires

It is so tired. Just turn back and see all the desires you have had. Have they given you rest? No. They have only created a few more desires and the few more desires, which come, have they given you rest? No. They have given you more, for you to achieve more and have another trip on the merry-go-round. You are not just here, you just go round. You know, the merry-go-round has horses, which do not go anywhere. They just go round in the same place.
Stuck in this illusion, you travel miles and miles but go nowhere. This is what desire does to you.
There are two types of arguments even in this. “The sage has said that you should not have desires; so I will not desire anything” is one argument. Now, saying “I do not want any desire” becomes another desire. Some people do this and that is beating around the bush. Some people are on a trip to destroy their desires.

We are tiny and sweet; delightful like sesame seeds with jaggery. So stay small and sweet and you will truly become big. And if you think you are very big and important in any field or aspect then the downfall will begin ~ Sri Sri

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 - Verse 7

Verse: asmakam tu visista ye
tan nibodha dvijottama
nayaka mama sainyasya
samjnartham tan bravimi te

Translation: But for your information, O best of the brahmanas, let me tell you about the captains who are especially qualified to lead my military force.

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 1 - Verse 6

Chapter 1 -- Verse 6

Verse: yudhamanyus ca vikranta
uttamaujas ca viryavan
saubhadro draupadeyas ca
sarva eva maha-rathah

Translation: There are the mighty Yudhamanyu, the very powerful Uttamauja, the son of Subhadra and the sons of Draupadi. All these warriors are great chariot fighters

Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva or Guru Shakti

There are three forces: Brahma shakti, Vishnu shakti, and Shiva shakti. You may have one of these predominant. Brahma shakti is the force to create something new. Vishnu shakti is maintenance and Shiva shakti is bringing in transformation, filling in life, or destroying.

Some of you have Brahma shakti. You may create well, but you may not be able to maintain. For example, you may make friends very fast, but it does not last long.

There are others who cannot create but are good at maintaining. For example, people have long lasting friendships but cannot make any new friends. In such cases, Vishnu shakti is dominant.

And then there are others who have more of Shiva shakti. They bring in new life or transformation or they can destroy the whole set up.

In Guru shakti, all three shaktis have blossomed fully.

So each of you first identify which shakti you have more of and aspire for Guru shakti. Guru makes a group but a group cannot make a Guru.

Guru Punch!

Meditation is like water to the thirsty. Meditation is the way for inner peace, for upliftment of the spirit ~ Sri Sri

I am the answer to all the questions

Q: Guruji, please tell us what is Chitta?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Chitta is like Aakaasha (sky), that which is present everywhere inside us. Consciousness is also known asChitta – Chaitanya Shakti (conscious energy). Chiti, Chaitanya, Chitta – just like water, ice and vapor – are all different forms of the same Chitta. When it solidifies, it is called Chitta, when it becomes fluid it is called Chiti.

Q: Why do we ring the bell in a temple?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Because there are so many thoughts wandering in your mind, with the sound of the bells you come into the present. Your thoughts come to a halt.
The drummers beat large drums, play the Naadaswaramshehnai, bells, and conch. All these sounds are made so that your mind becomes quieter.
Your mind is like a kid. When a kid is crying, you cry louder than the kid and the kid becomes quiet. Have you noticed that? In the same way, when there is so much noise in your mind and too many thoughts, they blow the conch, ring the bell and with all the sounds, the mind comes to the present moment.
With so much noise around, the mind cannot think. It cannot wander. So it is used as a technique.
All outside sounds suppress the sound of the mind for a little while. This short-term suppression should lead the mind to silence. Once it goes into the depths of meditation, all words feel burdensome. But when the mind is full of words, and you are troubled by too many thoughts, these sounds bring relief. Have you seen in the Buddhist monastery, there is a big gong? They ring the gong and that vibration will keep you silent. So, from sound to silence, the journey is very important.

Q: Why did God create good-looking and bad-looking people? Is it a result of their past karma?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Now, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
You think somebody is bad-looking? Ask their mother or their grandmother. They never think their children are bad. And, what do you mean by good-looking and bad-looking? How long can you stay? The most good-looking, after sometime don’t look so nice.
It is not in the outer appearance, it is the spirit, the inner soul. Look at the spirit inside, there is inner beauty. That beauty of the spirit is undying. It increases day by day. It increases with age also.
Wisdom and maturity bring so much beauty. Beauty is not just some appearance.
Similarly, ugliness is not out of appearance. Somebody may look very good with good makeup, but if their heart is very ugly and the mind is all twisted and full of negativity, however nice they may appear, their vibrations will tell you that they are not beautiful. Yes?
So, it is the mind that makes one beautiful.

Q: What is the relationship between the seven chakras and the seven levels of existence?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Just the number is same.

Q: Guruji, there is a Yoga Rave this Friday in Bangalore. Can you ask everybody to come?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: In Bangalore, there is a Yoga Rave at the ‘Taj City’. Very Good! Go ahead. Rock the city!

Q: Is there life after death? They say there are seven births. Are the seven births clubbed with the human birth or after human birth?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: There is life after death. We will have to come back. We shall keep coming back. There is nothing like seven, it can be any number.

Q: Guruji, what is the significance of silence in our life and how can we maintain silence in our daily routine?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: There is no need to maintain silence in our daily routine, but there is also no need to speak too much! If you maintain some silence, you will think before you speak. If you keep talking, you yourself will not understand what you are saying.

Q: Guruji, I only want to do seva, sadhana and remain in knowledge. But right now, my mind is going in all other directions, being attracted towards guys and all that. I don't want to be in that position. I want my mind to be with you. What do I do?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: You want to get married? Yes good! Go ahead and find the right guy and get married. Put your name in the Art of Living matrimonial. They will find some suitable person, or you find yourself.

Q: Guruji, some pictures have been taken of people during meditation and it has been found that white patches come on the skin. Many times it is said that these are reflective dust particles.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: That is ok. While doing meditation, all angels and gods are there around us.

Q: Guruji, I don't want to get married.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Okay! If you don't want to get married, it’s fine.

Q: Guruji, they say one should not step out on the night of Amavasya (new moon). Why is that?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: In the ancient times, it used to be extremely dark on the Amavasya night and there was no electricity. People used to advise against going out so that one does not accidentally step on a snake or fall into a ditch. Even then, it is not that one should not travel on the night of Amavasya.
There is some effect of planetary positions also.

Q: Guruji, what is the essence of life?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
Oh, you want to know the essence of life? Very good! Just keep coming and sitting here. It will reveal itself one day.

Q: How do I express my thoughts effectively? I think one thing and say something completely different.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: You have already asked this question effectively, that you want to express your thoughts.
Do more of advance courses. Don’t you see you have already improved?
How much have you improved? 50% you have improved? So you already know how you can improve another 50%. More advance courses.
Also repeat the basic courses. Don't think I have already done the basic course once, no!
If you repeat it, it brings you to a higher plane every time.

Q: Guruji, if a boy and a girl are getting married, should horoscopes be matched or not?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: You can match horoscopes, it is fine. If there is a match it is really good, but if the horoscopes don’t match, it is okay. Just pray! Everything is acceptable.

Q: Guruji, we are trying to establish a gaushala (cow shed) but we are not achieving much success.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Anything you start, you will face some difficulty initially.
In agriculture also, after doing so much farming, there is no profit, isn’t it? A little bit of difficulty will be there.

Q: Guruji, what is the significance of netra daan (eye donation)?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: The significance of eye donation is that even after you, your eyes will be of use to someone.

Q: Guruji, once people do the course then slowly they move away from this. Suggest a plan to unite them all. Also, I am going home tomorrow, please be with me!
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Conduct programs and satsangs everywhere and give some responsibility to each one of them. If you give them the responsibility then they will do it.
If those who have come as guests, we think and treat them as guests, then they will come and go as guests. But if we see them as responsible people, then the interest will dawn in them too.
Go home happily. I am always with you - all the Sri Lankan and Tamil Nadu people.

Q: Guruji, it’s said that when we have your grace only then we get answers to our questions. And some say that we should keep asking you the question until you answer. So which is the right way? How do we get answers out of you?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Now that you have asked, I am the answer to all the questions. What can I answer? Does any question remain in your mind when you come in front of me? Everything clears out, right? Then it is fine.
In the Upanishads, there is a saying that all the questions disappear when the heart opens up.
I think I said it about four days ago. That happens here, isn't it? Your questions disappear, right? Yes! Here we are making an effort to bring out some question so that we can have some conversation, unlike yesterday.
Otherwise, I have nothing to say and you have nothing to hear and you are happy and I am happy. We are in a happy-happy world. So we do not speak through words, we speak through energy, isn't it!

Q: Guruji, in Rajasthan, they have deep faith in Sati Mata. Shiva’s consort is worshipped as Sati. Is the Sati Mataof Rajasthan and Shiva’s Sati one and the same, or different?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: All are forms of Shakti; there is only one Sati. It is Shiva’s Shakti which is worshipped in different forms by people.
But the ritual that someone became a sati, (a ritual where the widow immolates herself on her husband’s funeral pyre) – is nowhere. Had this tradition been there, in the Mahabharata, Kunti would have become sati, but Kunti never became sati. Similarly, there were many other maternal figures whose life existed even after their husbands (died). They did not become sati.
It was somewhere in the middle-ages that this trend started. It should not be done. It is not right.
In the shastras, in our Vedas, nowhere is it written that man is superior and woman is inferior, or woman is superior and man is less – that is not the case. All are equal. Women, men, all are the same.
Do not discriminate based on caste, do not discriminate based on religion, do not discriminate based on gender – this person is man or woman – do not discriminate based on that. Look for the One in all. Everyone has the same radiance (noor), the same soul. This is all I will say.

Q: In our country, there are so many spiritual organizations but they do not join together for any common cause. If this division remains, how will the world become one family?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Yes! We are ready. We also keep inviting other organizations to join in and take everyone along. There is a verse by Rabindranath Tagore, ‘Ekla chalo re’ – go alone, if anyone joins in – well and good, but you continue onward.

Q: Guruji, I want to know if Gurus also feel helpless before their devotees.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Absolutely! They are the servants of their devotees.

Q: Guruji, how can we practice yama (restraint) and niyama (discipline) in our seva?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Be centered, meditate regularly, and have a sankalpa (resolution) in your mind that you have to exercise yama and niyama. Keep your sankalpa strong. Once or twice, even if you slip from it, you will come back.

Q: Guruji, how do you get to know of our problems before we even speak them out? And even before we can do something, they get solved and I am sure that it’s all because of you. Please tell me how does this happen?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Why should I tell you my secret?

Wisdom from Guruji !!

Happiness should also be controlled. When we are happy, we should channelize our happiness. Sukh mein seva dukh mein tyaag – memorize this formula.
When you are happy, do some sevice, and when you are sad or miserable then surrender your sorrow. If you do not have the attitude of surrender, sorrow will never leave you. If one does not surrender even in sorrow, then there is no way out for that person. Surrender and service, both should go together in life.
The happiness that we are experiencing must be given a direction.
See how joyful we are – we have been meditating since morning and we all feel so good. We must think, what do we have to do so that everyone may experience this joy?
Do seva, we have to build a corruption-free, violence-free, and oppression-free society. For that we have to fight against ignorance. There are a variety of superstitions in our country and we have to eliminate those. There is illiteracy which we have to remove. We have to fight against ignorance.
To all those people who are watching (the webcast), I would tell them too that they should meditate for a little while every day. Meditation increases joy, keeps the body healthy, intellect sharp and makes one intuitive - whatever is about to happen gets reflected in the mind beforehand.
Embrace all bad thoughts. Why? Because if you try to chase them away, they will persist. So if you shake hands with them, they will immediately go away.
Kshane Kshane Uparameti – slowly, gradually, as the mind is released from the stream of thoughts, within two to four minutes, or ten to fifteen minutes, the mind settles. As we continue to practice this, such a joy and peace will arise and honesty will become the nature of our life. We will not have to make any effort to be honest; honesty will become our nature. We must keep ourselves open.
Annaji (Anna Hazare) has come here today. In his life he has always had a completely open personality; a deep sense of belongingness with everyone. Just as we are here, absolute openness!
This same kind of openness on your part - to do something for the country, to sacrifice and feel, ‘I don’t need anything for myself, everything is for my country.’ If this spirit awakens in every one of our youth, then the very look of the country will change.
It has to change and we will have to bring that change, there is no other option.
Are you all ready?
Annaji, your army is ready! We have a factory here for preparing the army!
Without going inward, life will not move in the right direction. Neither will there be success at work – for success at work also one has to go inward, at least for a little while every day. When one achieves success at work, then there will be stability in life and we become peaceful. And then, whatever we wish for will start happening. How many of you have experienced this?
This is the significance of the spirituality of India – Sankalpa Siddhi. Defeat does not come near us. Why? It is because of the increase in sattva. When there is an increase in satoguna, you can gain victory over the world. Wherever you go, in whichever corner, no matter what kind of challenge you face, you will overcome it effortlessly with a smile.
How? It will not be the achievement of a single individual or the small mind. It is the universal consciousness, the cosmic consciousness, the supreme power - when we get connected to it, only then can we achieve success and attain perfection (siddhi).
There is an old saying in U.P. (Uttar Pradesh) Ram jharokhe baithe sabka mujra le. This is proven in life, so if you try to do something without spirituality, you will never achieve success. Spirituality is our essence, our foundation, and the very basis of our life. So, hold on to it, and then see how everyone’s mind changes, even the worst minds change.
Nobody in this world is bad but even those who appear to be bad, we can transform their minds also. There is so much power in this knowledge. That is why it has been called Brahma Gyaan (supreme knowledge).
Yesterday, someone asked me, ‘Why have all these corrupt people come here?’
I said, ‘I would like you to bring all the corrupt people in the world here, to the ashram.’ Let them come and sit here for some time, and witness the joy here. They give so much importance to money because there is no love in life, no sacrifice, no peace has been experienced, no joy achieved. If they experience the joy here then money will lose its charm. If they could jump and dance like all of you and sing in ecstasy, then everything else will lose its charm. Wealth, alcohol are nothing, they have no juice. So let there be juice in life.
So, just like how you have found such joy in life, spread this joy and this juice to everyone around you. Let them drink it – you drink and make others also drink. In a bar, the bartender makes others drink, but does not drink himself. But we first drink ourselves, and then make others drink.
Today Arvindji (Arvind Kejriwal) is also sitting with us. He is so good, so articulate, so informative. He keeps all information and knowledge. There is intense love for the country in Arvind’s heart. Every one of us are with him, and he has a lot to do for the country in the future.
The voice of truth should be bold. Make your voice so powerful that it is heard in every corner. Love for the country (desh prem) and love for God (daiva prem) are not separate. If you love God, you will definitely love your country, because it is the creation of God after all! They both are not separate. And if you love the world, the creator who is sitting inside you, you will turn towards Him also and thank Him sometime. If you don’t do that, it will not work.
See, each one of us is like corn. Corn is hard and popcorn is soft and white. In the same way, energy from the meditation and all these (practices) makes the corn pop and become fluffy! It makes your heart open and your mind clear. It is such beautiful wisdom. Isn’t it such a nice and great wisdom?!

Q: Guruji, all of us seem to have a clear idea of how other people should lead their lives, but very few have an idea about their own lives. Why is it so and what can we do about it?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Now, are you talking about yourself, or your spouse, or someone else?
Of course, your spouse will give you ideas on how you should be living and what you should be doing, and your mother will give you advice, your sister will dictate you, and your daughter will tell you ‘Papa, this is how you should behave.’
The same happens with women also. Your husband will tell you and your brother will advise you.
You are swamped with advices. You are bombarded with advices. Take them and listen to them, but don’t lose sight of what you want to do. Don’t lose sight of your goal.
Set up a goal for yourself and one for society, where you want the society to go.
Now, advices are not bad. You can’t discard all the advices. At the same time, you can’t take them all in. So, you need to keep your mind very open. What is it that you want in life? What progress have you made? Look into it.
Every now and then, we need to revisit our own state of mind. ‘Where are we going? What is it that I want? What I did, is it correct or what I am going to do, is it right?’ This introspection is essential.

Q: Guruji, you just mentioned about the stream of thoughts. Is there anything we can do to stop or reduce the bombarding of thoughts?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Thoughts are part of your consciousness; they come and go.
Now, how to get rid of thoughts? There are four ways.
One is when you are shocked. If you get a shock, even an electrical shock, your mind goes blank. I don’t want you to do that (get an electrical shock) and get to that (state)! Every shocking incident creates blankness in your mind.
Second is music. If you are singing, if you are participating in music, then also thoughts become less.
Any strong emotion can bring down the number of thoughts at that particular time.
The third is exercise.
And the fourth is with pranayama and deep meditation.
Still, if you are bombarded with too many negative thoughts, know that something must be wrong with your bowel movement. Do Shankh Prakshalan (intestinal cleansing). That would also help. It will make your mind much calmer. But pranayama and meditation is the best.

Q: Dear Guruji, we are all the same at the very core. Then, why do some people long to know about the self and spirituality and other people do not? Isn’t it the same spirit in them too?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, it varies. Different people have different interests. Some people are so fond of mathematics. Ask Bawa (Khurshed Batliwala); he is so fond of mathematics. He did a video on mathematics ((a+b)2 = a2+2ab+b2) and there were so many hits that the server crashed! There were two and half lakh hits on that website.
So, he (Bawa) is a genius in mathematics and he goes into it. And ask D.K. Hari, he has explored history so well! Hari has made a book on corruption called ‘U Turn India’. It is a very well thought about plan on how India can turn around to make a better economy; change the economy of the whole state from the very basis.
The Ganges, which we think is a natural river, he has proved that it is a man-made river. It is an artificial river, with all proof and evidence. If you go to bharatgyan.com, it is amazing work that Hema and Hari have done.
So, it is the interest, and some people get this inquisitiveness, this interest to know ‘Who am I?’ ‘What is this consciousness?’ ‘What is this Self?’ ‘Who is this Self?’
‘I eat, sleep, drink, and do all this activity, but finally who am I? One day I am going to die; after death what will happen to me? Where do I go?’
These questions come. They are very natural and they show the sign of maturity of intellect. Only a mature intellect can fathom into spirituality; the quest of spirit of enquiry comes then. So, when India was materially very prosperous, spirituality also dawned. When India was spiritually at its peak, it is exactly then when it was also materially very prosperous. But today, it has gone down in both; it needs a U-turn.

Q: Guruji, is there any effective way of dealing with anxiety? I feel anxious even for small household jobs.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Ujjayi pranayam. Keep doing it several times now and then and notice it will start reducing from the very first sitting. Also, regular meditation.

Q: Dear Guruji, while answering a question, you mentioned that our energy level goes down after watching movies. But when I watch you Guruji, I feel more energy.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: That’s ok! So, you have your own experience.
What I am saying is, when you see people who go into movie theatres, they look so fresh and energetic. When they come out of the movie theatre, look at their faces. They look so tired and dull! They are not coming out with great enthusiasm or energy, but all drained. Isn’t it the experience?
I am not saying you should never watch movies. You can watch movies, doesn’t matter, but not too many and not too often, take care.
You need to be updated about the news, but you don’t have to watch the same violence, domestic fights and all these sort of things. Then when you close your eyes you see all that violence in your mind. That is no good for a Sadhak.

Q: Dear Guruji, I don’t have any questions. All I want to say is that I love you and thank you for everything. But tell me Guruji, do you want to say anything to me?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Listen, I have been saying it all the time! What I want to say, I keep saying, right?

Q: (A member of the audience spontaneously asked a question without speaking into the mike. The question was inaudible in the recording.)
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: See, you should never think the future is karma or destiny. See the past as destiny, future as free will and be happy in the present. This is the intelligent way to be. You know what the fools do? They keep regretting the past, thinking the past was free will, and they think future is all destined and they don’t do anything about it and in the present they are miserable. So, you have two choices, got it?

Q: What is the principle behind the Shiva Linga? Please explain.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Love is Shiva. The substance which is everywhere is Shiva.
Something that is everywhere, how can we recognize it? To recognize it as a symbol, a stone is kept, a form is kept. That is it.
God is not in that form. The form is a symbol that reminds us of God. It is like you look at your grandfather’s photo and say this is my grandfather. Seeing the photo you get reminded of your grandfather or grandmother or mother. But is that photo your grandfather or grandmother? No! Because of the photo, we get reminded of them. In the same way, through the form we worship the substance beyond the form.

Q: It is said that there are similarities between Islam and Christianity and also Christianity and Hinduism. Is there any similarity between Hinduism and Buddhism?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Yes, definitely. Gautama Buddha was born as a Hindu, and then he became a Sanyasi. There is no difference between what Gautama Buddha said and what is there in the Upanishads. It is almost the same.
In Hinduism, we went into a lot of rituals and customs; he said there is no need for all these.
Killing animals for sacrifice should not be done. No need for yagyas. Thus he took people from that state to the state of meditation. Buddha spoke about meditation.
In Buddhism, it is said that let everyone be happy, let all the Gods take care of us. It is the same that is said in the Upanishads.

Q: Why are Sri Lankan Tamils still suffering? Do they have a lot of negative karma?
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: This asking of ‘why’ all the time is a problem.
We cannot understand why they is suffering. Ask what we can do for them. It is better to ask what we can do for the Sri Lankan Tamils, rather than asking why they are suffering. All of you work towards that. Swamiji Sadyojatha and other volunteers from the ashram are all working towards that. All of you join; we will bring it all back to normal together.

Q: Guruji, I want to give these peacock feathers to you and Annaji.
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Keep the wings with yourself, you have to take flight. We have already flying. You need it, keep it with you. Learn to fly! I don’t take feathers, I give feathers!

TWO TYPES OF KNOWLEDGE

There are two types of knowledge. The first one is pure knowledge and the second one is applied knowledge. Applied knowledge may benefit you directly and immediately but pure knowledge benefits you indirectly in the long run.

If there are some things that you have studied or understood that you are unable to put into practice, do not get disheartened. Sometime in the future, if you do not discard the knowledge you have as impractical, it will be of use to you.

Often people discard the pure knowledge for its lack of immediate application. In fact these two types of knowledge compliment each other. Applied knowledge without pure knowledge remains weak. And pure knowledge without application will remain unfulfilled.

Do not discard or label the knowledge as impractical. Do not label yourself as weak or unworthy because you are unable to apply the knowledge in your day-to-day life.

Sometimes when you are alone in nature, silent, taking a walk, looking at the sand on the beach, a bird in the sky, or while meditating – suddenly the knowledge will emerge and you will recognize the knowledge dawning in your life.

Guru Punch!

Everything in nature, from grass to the sun is beneficial to life. We express gratitude to whatever is beneficial to life. Give thanks to the sun and to the earth. That is why we say, 'Sarva deva namsakaram Keshavam prati- gacchati' No matter whom you thank, all gratitude reaches the one and only God ~ Sri Sri

Guru Punch!

Longing is God. It is good to be in longing. And this longing is such that it has no solution. It never fades. This thirst is such that it can never be quenched ~ Sri Sri

ARGUMENTS AND WRONG ACTION

A person who argues should not be given knowledge. An argumentative mind is not receptive to knowledge. When someone is in an argumentative mood, then giving knowledge or advice is in vain. In an argumentative mood you feel you know it all. Then you are not ready for knowledge. That is why wise people do not give advice when they are in an argumentative environment.

Argument has a purpose. It can bring out the truth if there is no emotion or sense of "I" attached to it. Argument can also have a disadvantage. It can make untruth appear to be truth.

A wise man will not take arguments seriously; he will just have fun with them. Wisdom is beyond all arguments.

*****
Both a worldly person and a spiritual person will tell you not to do wrong, though the reasons they give are totally different. A worldly person will tell you not to do wrong because it hurts or causes him pain. A spiritual person will tell you not to do wrong because it would only harm you more.

Exercise

Identify any one specific virtue or good quality you would like to have. Ask for it on Guru Purnima day (the full moon - July 15-16) and know that you have it.

Patanjali Yoga Sutras - Knowledge Sheet 7

Are you looking for proof? Debating within yourself? Are you hanging on to 'wrong knowledge' of how things are? You do not know how things are because the world is fluid. There is nothing solid here. Nobody is solid. Nobody’s mind is solid. No thoughts are solid. The whole world is fluid.
Anything can change any time, in any way. The whole world is filled with all sorts of possibilities. But your mind tries to fix everything — thought, people, ideas and places — into definite items or quantities. This is how it is. Your mind has set ideas of yourself, using proof, wrong knowledge or vikalpa, fantasies or fears or dwelling in the past. The four modulations of the mind plus sleep, that is another modulation.

Abhyasavairagyabhyam tannirodhaha

They can be restrained by practice or dispassion.
- Patanjali Yoga Sutra #12
How do you get over that? One can overpower this vrutti (modulation) through abhyasa (practice) and vairagya (detachment or self-centeredness).

Tatra sthithou yatnobhyasaha

Practise is that effort made to steadily be there in the seer.
- Patanjali Yoga Sutra #13
That which you do to be there is called abhyasa or practice. Abiding in the seer is abhyasa, that which you do to be right here, this moment is abhyasa. A little effort is needed to relieve you from the five modulations and just be here, now, now, now, now, now. Bringing the mind to the present and not dwelling on the past memories. That effort is called abhyasa.
You can do the following practise. Close your eyes. You are not going to dwell on any logic now. That means you are free from pramana. You are not interested in proof from anything. You just observe it. You relax. You are not interested in any wrong knowledge or right knowledge, whatever.

Often when the mind has wrong knowledge, it thinks it has the right knowledge. Retrieving the mind from knowing also (from knowledge). You are not anxious to see, smell, touch, feel, understand anything... let things be the way they are. Who cares? Right or wrong, no judgement. That means that you are freeing yourself from viparyayaya and vikalpa.
If the mind is on some imagination, fantasy, just knowing that it is imagination, fantasy is enough and it fades away. Just like when you know that you are dreaming, the dream vanishes. Then free yourself from sleep and relieve yourself from all the experiences of the past. Pleasant and unpleasant experiences are gone. The moment is free, fresh and full. Being here this moment totally is abhyasa.
The mind might try to go to the past, to smruti, or may try to go off to sleep and it can try to bring some logic and justification or some knowledge or some fantasies. Just knowing that again it is getting into the five vruttis, without aversion or craving, come back to the center, to the seer. This is abhyasa.
Next Wednesday: Learn how you can free your mind.

Guru Punch!

When you happen to be on the top, be totally humble. The more you go up, the more humble you become. Humility is the sign of success. And when there is humility then there are no obstacles. Everything keeps on happening naturally ~ Sri Sri

THE WISDOM OF SECRETS

A wise person makes no effort to conceal a secret. But he does not make an effort to reveal a secret either.

For example, you do not talk about menstruation, death, etc. to a five-year-old, but as they grow older these things are not hidden from them any more. They become known as a matter of course.
An unenlightened one tries to protect a secret; and he also reveals the secret at the wrong time, to the wrong person, in the wrong place and makes a big fuss about secrets.

Trying to protect a secret causes anxiety and discomfort.

An ignorant one is not comfortable with a secret, whether revealed or unrevealed, but the wise one is comfortable with a secret whether revealed or unrevealed!
